November 5, 2013 Records Management

Reflect upon how this chapter may have provided insight into your own personal recordkeeping. What will you do to change your current methods, now that you are aware of the importance of managing your records?

  1. I always keep my personal files in separate hanging folders based on the subjects. However, I never put labels or arrange the folders alphabetically. When I receive a document, which I know I already have the folder, I just put it inside the hanging folder without even arranging it based on the date. When I need a certain document, I can find the folder but I need to look for the date because it is not in order. I need to change my recordkeeping system, so when I need a document, I can get it right away.

  2. Locating my records has not been an issue for me, it has been keeping them for too long. I feel lazy and resistant when it comes to cleaning out my records. In the future, I am going to purchase a more secure file box; one that has a lock and tougher to break in to.

  3. So much has been happening in our household since we moved five years ago, I have become rather lax in my filing. This year, we purchased a 4-drawer file cabinet to replace two 2-drawer file cabinets. Later, we purchased a desk and rearranged all the furniture to turn our “computer room” into an office. Family members helped with moving files so many files have been mixed up. Also, between working at home and class work, the last thing I want to do is handle more paperwork; I really want to go outside instead. I will just have to push myself to bring order back to my paperwork and to purge unnecessary documents. I actually spent some time last week working on my paperwork since we did not have homework.

  4. When it comes to my household and keeping track of important information, such as the, mortgage, insurance and tax documents, they are in seperate folders which are color coded. I could however orgainze them better so they are in one place and not in differnt parts of the house. I should put the utiltilies bills into a file a folder instead of hanging them on the refrigerator with a clip.

  5. I know that I am skilled at organizing the files according the ARMA regulations when I am in the office, however the home filing system needs to be burned and start from scratch. I admit that both my husband and I are taught to file according to subject. This looks like a good time for me to show him the correct way to file, so we can do a complete filing makeover.
