October 8, 2013 Leadership

Reflect upon how this chapter may have helped you to think about your future role as a leader, and what characteristics do you feel you need to work on in order to be able to inspire and motivate others?

  1. This chapter made me think about a few thing that I need to work on to gain better leadership skills. I need better communication skills, to be listen better, and be confident in my ideas. I also think I do not consistently live by my values.

  2. This chapter helped me think about how much I would like to work on listening empathetically. I have a tendency to "half-listen" when having a discussion, while still thinking about my point-of-view only. While I am in class I think I do a really good job of actively listening, but I need to work on it outside of class as well. Now that I am more aware of it, I do not think it will be difficult for me to change my habits.

  3. Some key factors of leadership that I am going to work on are delegating and following up. I often take on too much, and in turn, create unnecessary stress on myself. I am going to work on recognizing people's strengths and assigning tasks that fit. I will check in with them to see how things are progressing and ask if they have any questions. I want to make sure that I am being clear of my expectations and that the end product meets them.

  4. Listening to tonight's seven characteristics of a great leader reminded me of my father. How he negotiated the deals, listened to other people even though he disagreed with them, and created a great conversation between himself and the other person involved are the attributes that he specialized in. Communication is one of the biggest area that I value, yet one of the greatest obstacle that I need to overcome. Actively listening and communicating goes hand in hand, and this is one of the things I want to improve on. I do actively listen, yet I struggle in changing the flow of the conversation from rough to smooth.

  5. As an administrative professional, we might be asked to lead a group; for example, a team to prepare an office procedure on how to work effectively. This chapter has helped me what I need to know to be a good leader. I need to set a good example, learn how to be a good listener and not prejudiced.

  6. As an administrative professional, I am constantly asked to help or take on new task. Just this week, we lost an employee, before I was asked to handle most of her task and workflow I took it upon myself to do the work, I volunteered to cover the front until 6pm two nights a week until we find a replacement. I had to delegate, and lead our part-time file clerk to handle specific task that will need to be taken care of, running to the court house and filing documents, sending out mail to other offices, I took on this leadership role in hopes of keeping the office running smoothly and not feeling the affects of being short handed.

  7. I have held leadership roles in the past. I feel I need to work on delegating tasks and work on my own self esteem/confidence. I feel if I can show confidence in my abilities I can inspire others to feel confident in their abilities. Also, if I delegate some tasks I give others the opportunity to use their skills or learn new ones.
