October 15, 2013 Written Communication

Reflect upon your current written communications.  Then, discuss those things that you will do in the future to improve future written communications (formal and/or informal).

  1. I began to see the difference between oral and written communication; in fact, the cultural difference in the way we live and how we communicate. The rules in using proper grammar and punctuation has made me realize that if we don't challenge and improve ourselves, then we wouldn't be viewed as a person of importance when representing a company or even our country.

Without having the proper written communication skills it makes it hard for other to take one seriously, in the workplace today; it's very important to have good written communication skills, grammar and knowing the correct punctuation. So many people today will avoid reading anything from you if you have poor written communication skills. I have found that after yesterday's class, I am more conscious about my grammar.

  3. Years ago, I worked in a position that would now be called an administrative assistant. I created many types of correspondences, both formal and informal. My current employment requires limited written correspondences, primarily e-mails. I feel my punctuation skills have declined because of lack of use. Reviewing the rules in class yesterday helped me understand the rules again. Practice will help me use the rules correctly. I need lots of practice so that I will feel confident with my punctuation skills again.

  4. Due to the technology, we write more emails than letters nowadays because emails are faster to reach the recipients. It has been years since the last time I wrote formal letters. Reviewing the punctuation rules made me remember some of the rules that I already forgot because I hardly use it. I also learned some rules that I have never known before. To be able to have good written communication skills, I need to improve myself by doing a lot of practice in grammar and punctuation.
